On 1 May, the British Chinese Project (BC Project) held a press conference in Chinatown to remind the Chinese population in the UK of their right to vote in the coming Euro and Local Elections. With the deadline for registration (6 May) looming, it was important for activists from all 3 major parties to be united on this. Mock ballot boxes were made up to get the point across.

Representing Chinese Liberal Democrats were co-founder Merlene Emerson and Parliamentary Candidate for Somerton and Frome Sarah Yong. Sarah was recently selected to stand in this held seat, taking over from David Heath MP and, if successful in the General Elections in May 2015, will be the first MP of Chinese descent in the UK.

Merlene was pleased to announce to the Chinese press that of the 8 Chinese candidates standing in coming local elections, 6 were Liberal Democrats:

- Cllr Linda Chung is defending her seat and seeking re-election in Hampstead Town in Camden which she first won in a byelection in 2008,

- Alex Melia, Festival Director of Dollis Hill Music Festiva, is poised to represent Dollis Hill ward on Brent Council,

- former Parliamentary Candidate, Phil Ling is standing in West Barnes ward in Merton in SW London where there are currently 2 Lib Dem Councillors,

- former independent Euro candidate Steven Cheung has now joined the Liberal Democrats and will be representing the party in St James's ward (including Soho) in Westminster, and

- HongLing Dyer and Merlene herself are standing for Richmond Council in the adjoining wards of Mortlake and Barnes, pledging to bring back a fairer, greener and safer borough for residents in Richmond.

CLDs in conjunction with BC Project are organising a number of action days for Candidates and need your help.
