Chinese Lib Dems arrange tour of Parliament for Community Group

31 Oct 2011

According to a Chinese proverb, 'the heaven is high and the emperor is far away'. The world of the governing authority is often perceived as out of reach and irrelevant to the lives of ordinary people.

Not so for a group of 18 from Bristol and Avon Chinese Women's Group who were treated to a trip to London including a tour of the Palace of Westminster last Friday, 28 Oct.

The leader of the group, Ms Rosa Hui (MBE, DL), no stranger to the British political system herself, had expressed an interest in a tour of Westminster for her members. She then contacted the Chinese Liberal Democrats, who were able to set the wheels in motion.

CLDs contacted their MP Stephen Williams of Bristol West to sponsor their tour and to procure the special permit. Baroness Susan Kramer welcomed the group on their arrival at Westminster Hall before handing them to one of the official guides.

The group began what was a most interesting tour at the Sovereign's entrance, into the Robing Room, through the splendour of the Peers Gallery, into the gilt chamber of the House of Lords, across Central Lobby and finally to the green benches of the House of Commons. They were also told about the significance of the red lines separating the members on opposing sides.

"It is important for those from the Chinese community to learn about the workings of Parliament. That way they will feel a connection with the UK political system and be more inclined to register and vote at elections" said Merlene Emerson, Chair of CLDs.
