22 Sep 2011

Chinese Liberal Democrats celebrated their 5th birthday on the evening of 20 September 2011 at the Tin Tin Restaurant at Brindley Place in Birmingham. The event was a great success with CLD Patron Lord Paddy Ashdown as guest speaker. Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP and many other party members also attended the event.

The following day, Chair of Chinese Lib Dems Merlene Emerson and her colleagues were invited by Dr Yeow Poon and Ms Anna Yim to visit the Birmingham Chinese Community Centre in Digby. They were impressed by the excellent facilities and amenities of the centre as well as by the enthusiasm of staff and users that they met.

Merlene Emerson, Chair of Chinese Lib Dems said:

"In the last few years I have also visited other Chinese community centres in cities where our Party Conferences were held including Liverpool and Sheffield. I found that Chinese community centres across the country all face similar issues such as funding challenges and a shift in the needs of their users.

"I believe as the profile of the Chinese in Britain changes with more students and businesses coming from Peoples Republic of China, we need to consider tapping into new resources to maintain and invigorate our community centres."

Chinese Lib Dems are also keen to work with local parties to reach out to their constituents and encourage members from the Chinese and minority communities to put themselves forward as local champions and candidates.
