Chinese Lib Dems welcomes Brian Paddick as new Mayoral candidate for 2012!

6 Sep 2011

At a press conference held on 5 September 2011 at the party's new HQ at 8-10 Great George St, Brian Paddick was unveiled as the Party's candidate for the Mayoral elections in May 2012.

In his speech, Brian said he will be focussing on improving the standing and image of the Lib Dems so as to secure the maximum number of votes for the Party. He will work with current Lib Dem Assembly Members and GLA candidates for a distinctive and radical agenda for London.

His Deputy Mayor would be Caroline Pidgeon, the current Leader of the Lib Dem GLA group and No.1 on the London list.

Brian stressed that 2012 will not be a re-run of 2008 as we have now had a term of Boris Johnson as Mayor and know of his poor track record. Many of London's problems such as crime and safety, housing shortages and problems with transport have yet to be resolved.

Brian Paddick and Merlene Emerson

Merlene Emerson, chair of CLDs and a London-wide list candidate for the GLA said:

"I look forward to working with Brian again. We were both candidates in the last GLA elections in 2008, him as Mayoral Candidate and I as the Candidate for West Central constituency.

"We both share the same passion and commitment to London and are therefore standing again to deliver improvements for all Londoners.

"Brian will be embarking on a listening exercise from now till the end of the year visiting all 33 boroughs so we want to hear from you about what is important to you."

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:

"Brian's experience is exactly what London needs right now. Whether dealing with the aftermath of the riots or phone hacking and corruption in the Metropolitan Police, Brian has shown in recent weeks that he has the authority and leadership that London needs."
