Chinese LibDem Alex Payton wins byelection in Newbury

Chinese Lib Dem member Alex Payton has won a byelection in Newbury on 9th May making him the third councillor on the Chinese Lib Dem Executive. He joins the ranks of Cllr Linda Chung and Cllr Sam Li on Camden and Lewes Councils.
A barrister who has lived in West Berkshire for nearly thirty years, Alex campaigned on ensuring good value for taxpayers' money and on improvements to local amenities.
Since being elected to the Council Alex has raised these and other issues within the Council and with the West Berkshire councillors and is helping to deliver to the people of Newbury at large.
Ruwan Uduwerage-Perera, a member of Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats, also won a seat in the by-election making it a Lib Dem ethnic minority double.
Alex said, "I was very pleased to be elected and intend to work hard to repay the confidence that the voters of central Newbury have placed in me.
"I am also pleased that another Chinese Lib Dem has now been elected, as it helps to show to the Chinese population that the democratic process is for everyone and that it is possible for them to get involved."
