Local Election results

10 May 2011

On May 5th 2011 Cllr Sam Li was successfully re-elected to Lewes Town Council for a historic third term.

Cllr Sam Li said: "I am delighted that the people of Bridge Ward have decided to stay with the Liberal Democrats and I will continue to work hard to serve my constituents.

"I am also pleased that I am able to continue to inspire other British Chinese to get involved in politics locally as well as nationally. It is so important for us to stand up for our community and to have our voices heard."

Another Chinese Lib Dem member that stood in these elections was barrister Alex Payton, former Mayor of Thatcham and Parliamentary Candidate for Havant in 2010. Unfortunately he missed getting elected to West Berkshire Council by only 134 votes, and to Newbury Town Council by a mere 37 votes, but managed to increase the Lib Dem vote share in the ward against the national trend.

"I am proud of the achievements of all my colleagues" commented Merlene Emerson, Chair of Chinese Liberal Democrats. "They have shown that the Chinese community in UK is not silent and insular but are making positive contributions to British Society. In addition, in Northern Ireland, we have the brilliant results of Anna Lo from our sister Alliance Party, who has managed to top the polls in South Belfast!"

Anna Lo MLA was elected as the first Chinese member of a legislative body in Europe in 2007 and has been returned for a second term in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Other Councillors of Chinese background who did not face elections this year included Cllr Linda Chung (Camden), Cllr Allan Siao Ming Witherick (St Albans) and Deputy Mayor Helen Chuah (who will be inaugurated as Mayor of Colchester on 18 May 2011).
